| Final Copy Mr Saunders Camille Connaughton
Mr Murray Saunders had an interesting teaching experience when he taught in London during the year of 1974. The English were desperate to some extent to employ teachers, as there was a shortage of them in London. After four years at University in New Zealand, he was interested in having an opportunity of travelling and living elsewhere, so he ventured off to London to eventually get a job as a teacher at ‘Alperton High’. As there weren’t a great number of teachers, the teachers were being paid a bonus of approximately 300 pounds a year, which is equivalent to $1000AUD a year.
They were so desperate for teachers, that the same day Mr Saunders went to the school to apply he was offered the job and asked to begin the very next day. He was exposed to a completely different education system than what he expected- he found himself to be in positions where he would have to teach subjects that he wasn’t even qualified to teach- such as maths and french.
The low standards of the students took Mr Saunders by surprise- their confused faces when they were asked to perform simple mathematical equations was astounding. The students obviously hadn’t learnt how to ‘carry’ numbers, so inevitably long multiplication was beyond them. The student’s knowledge of English was very poor, so the idea of them being able to learn French was out of the question.
The boys in the class showed no interest in learning and had no discipline, whilst the younger girls ended up crying because they couldn’t get any work done, as the boys tended to have power over the teachers. The boys only communicated violently, and Mr Saunders recalls that sometimes he had to ‘physically throw boys out’ of the classroom to get them to even listen to him.
One day, Mr Saunders took the usually bad behaved class for a trip to France. He expected the worst from them on the basis of their behavior at school, but he was pleasantly surprised when they were much more mature and quieter than usual. He was suspicious however, and it turned out that one of the boys had stolen objects and held them in the jacket pockets.
Mr Saunders often felt that he wanted to quit, as the conditions he worked in were often difficult. He often recieved threats from the students, some stating that they (the student) were “gonna get him†after school. He felt that by teaching in London he could gain some experience working overseas as well as being able to travel. Mr Saunders spent his weekends partying, travelling and taking time off.
By teaching in London, he felt he had gained a greater understanding of the world, and it made him appreciate life more. He feels thankful, however, that he now teaches at PLC- it’s a much more pleasant environment! | | |
| urgh. i feel so ugly right now. I feel fat, ugly, fat, ugly. my face is a mess, i'm just hideous. how can anyone bare to look at me? I need to lose weight, i don't care if it means starving myself. people for whatever reason don't think i'm fat but i know i am. i know how gloria feels now. she felt like she was fat and we thought it was ridiculous but i now have a taste of that pain- food is my enemy. i will only eat if completely necessary but i know that if i feel hungry it's a good sign- i'll be losing weight. which is what i want. i want to be skinny. i'm sick of dancing and feeling my fat face droop down its fucking disgusting. today i had a small bowl of cereal, hopefully i won't eat much else than that. see you later | | |
| The song ‘Don’t know when but a day is gonna come’ by American band Bright Eyes explores particular issues, themes and attitudes that encourage the listener to enjoy the song, but become aware of the underlying concepts and message that the song presents. The powerful lyrics almost certinatley push the listener to question modern society and the beliefs which are pushed upon us. The song brings forward issues such as conforming and existence, as well as existentialism, highlighting their importance, but at the same pointing out the lack of attention they receive from today’s society.
The attitude towards Western society, particularly those with a degree of religious belief is dominated by a sense of negativity, and unfulfillment. The disaproval of religion and the beginning of existence gives the song its true meaning, “Did he come to save? Did he come at all?” As the lyrics go on to reveal the existentialist view that the lead singer sets forth, the listener is bombarded by sets of rhetorical questions that define the song’s purpose. The singer’s attitude towards dependence on others for aid is one of disapproval, “But what my Father did, you know it don’t mean shit. I’m not him.” The Band puts forward the seemingly popular issue of lack of independence there is present in modern society. As previously mentioned, the strong existentialist or sceptical attitude that aids in giving the song its meaning provides a strong foundation for the song and the message it is trying to get through, “…there is no truth. There is only you and what you make the truth.” The lyrics are a critique of ‘followers’ or those who conform to regulations and will believe whatever they are told. The non-conformist, existentialist attitudes towards society is presented through powerful lyrics in the song.
The theme of the song is one of philosophy, underpinning philosophical issues such as religion and God’s existence. The song brings to the attention of the listener clear, the the point questions that, although they appear to be straight-forward, can never be answered. The song criticises the knowledge of the world that society lacks in, “Well, I’m not a child. No, I am much younger than that.” The issue of knowledge in society is symbolized by youth, and the idea of being a child, thus having no knowledge or understanding of the world. The issue of being unable to comprehend or make sense of the world is raised, highlighting the lack of knowledge that people would like to say they have but really don’t. The issue of faith in religion rather than science is an important part of the song, “It will just go black. It will just go back to the way it was before.” This can be seen in two ways. The first is through the eyes of a religious person- ‘genesis’ or the idea that as we slowly destroy our earth with global warming and pollution, it will ‘go black’ and the end of time will come because of our lack of knowledge of being able to save the earch from destruction.
The song ‘Don’t know when but a day is gonna come.’ by Bright Eyes presents various attitudes, themes and issues that help ‘tie’ the song’s underlying concepts together, to get a response from the listener and encourage an individual response to the song.
